"If one had to choose just one country in which to spend a day or week visiting vineyards, New Zealand would have to be it,” writes wine guru Robert Joseph in the Footprint Wine Travel Guide to the World.

The country’s young wine industry embraced tourism and most wineries have a cellar door at least, while many also offer restaurants and winery tours.

Because wine is made throughout the length of the land, it is possible to combine visits to wineries with a wide range of other local attractions.
