This annual off-the-wall expression
of creativity
has become a unique
New Zealand icon.
The Montana World of WearableArt™ Awards takes art off the wall to
adorn
the body in wildly
wonderful ways,
which are
then presented on-stage as a
moving exhibition.
All art disciplines are encouraged
and entries display overlapping
skills
in sculpture, architecture,
weaving,
painting, glass craft, fabric
design and
even engineering.
The show was created by Nelson sculptor
Suzie
Moncrieff in 1986 and grew from
a
promotional
show for a rural Nelson
art
gallery to what is
now the
contemporary artistic showcase for
emerging and experienced artists,
sculptors, and fabric designers. Montana
has been a sponsor since 1998.
In 2005, the show grew to the point where
the town of its birth could no longer sustain it.
Since then, the show has been presented in Wellington.
