The Montana New Zealand Book Awards is an annual event identifying the very best books published in New Zealand. The objective of the awards is to recognise excellence and encourage the reading of quality New Zealand books. Brancott’s involvement with these awards dates back to 1994.

The award categories include Fiction, Environment, Poetry, Lifestyle, History and Biography, and Illustrative Arts. The Deutz Medal, recognising a single outstanding work of fiction, and The Montana Medal, recognising excellence in one outstanding book of non-fiction, were introduced in 1998.

Awards are also made for the Reviewer of the Year, Review Pages or Section of the Year and The AW Reed Lifetime Achievement Award.

Complementing the Book Awards, Montana New Zealand Poetry Day provides an opportunity for Book Award Poetry finalists to expose their works and creativity to a wide audience. Montana Poetry Day began in 2000.
